Beerpong Rules

Let me premise these rules by acknowledging there are many different ways to play beerpong.  The rules shown here are simply different versions.  The Rules - West Coast are the ones beerpong.com plays. Submit your rules on the Beerpong.com Forum.

There are a number of variations, but basically, you try to get the ping pong ball in the cup holding the opponents beer... Here is a quick and dirty overview

Check out the Beerpong Store

The Rules- West Coast 1:

  1. If you drink beer while playing beerpong, drink in moderation and stay in control. This keeps it fun for everyone.

  2. Lobs only (strictly enforced, not like regular ping pong.  Each ball should have a solid 2-3 foot arc).  Winning shots which aren't lobs don't count.  Re-do the point.

  3. Cups go in the corners of the table (paddle in from the side and back of the table)

  4. Hoops in the cup = The person who got hooped has to drink a designated amount of beer (determined before the game starts).

  5. Hits on the cup, but not in the cup = one sip.

  6. The point is never over until the ball is hit off the table, or it bounces twice.  A hit on the cup does not count as a bounce (i.e. hit the cup then hit the table, you can still hit it back before it bounces on the table a second time)

  7. All drinks (an accumulation of hits) occur after the point is over.

  8. The team hooped has the opportunity to throw the ball back into their opponents cup (either one) from their side of the table (don't lean in too much). If the throwback is successful, the person throwing back gets to decide if both teams drink, or if the drinks are cancelled.  Also, if the throwback is successful, the other team gets the opportunity to throw back, thus nullifying the original throwback, and so on.

  9. Doubles - partners rotate shots (just like regular ping pong).

  10. Singles - cups go into center of table (paddle in from edge).

  11. Must win by 2 points.

  12. Play to 21 or 11 if others are waiting to get on the table

Other rules to point out:

  1. Stoners: If the ball skips off the edge of the table before the other team can get a paddle on it, its declared a "Stoner".  Although the team who made the stoner still gets the point, they have to drink once since they got such a cheap ass point.

  2. Space:  If you forget the scores, or forget to drink or any other space, you and your partner have to drink.

  3. Remember, one for all and all for one. If one teammate drinks, both have to.  No saying, "You got hooped, or hit, you drink".  Both teammates drink together.

The Rules - As submitted by a 13 Year Veteran

If you are one of a competitive nature then these rules should intrigue you:

  1. Mass Consumption is unavoidable unless your remain undefeated. Un-defeated players may drink casually if desired.

  2. Game is until 4.

  3. Cup location is decided by:
Doubles - paddle length from edge of table closest to you. -
paddle length from middle line towards side-line.
Singles - paddle length from edge closest to you, on mid-line.

  4. Play is with 12 or 16 oz. cups. Bottles and cans work with slight
rule variation (no splooks - see rule #6.)

  5. Hit the opposing cup(s). Never on serve.
hit cup = drink 1 (in doubles-it could hit both cups = drink 2.)

  6. Sink the ball in opposing cup(s). Never on serve.
a splook = chug full beer. Game over. Don't splook a serve.

  7. Place ball, strategically or accidentally, in position where
opponent might knock their own beer over.

  8. If you're responsible for knocking over your own beer you must, in
doubles - chug remained of partners beer, or in singles - drink heavily
    and feel ashamed.

  9. Ball must be served on the table.  If not - do over. This is a sham.

  10. Play is based on continuous volley.  Mostly everything counts,
within reason.  Ball off of; floor, wall, ceiling, window, fore-head,
beer can, ashtray, whatever, is all good.  Play with the understanding,
however, that you're trying to maintain a flow to the game.  Don't be an
    ass.

  11. Ball can not bounce more than twice in front of cup.

  12. No Blocking allowed.

  13. Play with a list to rotate next.
    Play Round robins.
    Play Best of 3 / 5 / 7 / Etc.
    Any beer will do.

Virginia Rules

OK, this is quite different than the West Coast rules.  Here on the East
Coast we play like this:

  1. 6 Red or Blue "Party Cups".  Fill the beer up to the first rim on the cup (about 1/3 full).  This equals 2 full beers per team.  We arrange them in a pyramid (a paddle off the back of the table), 3 cups in the back, 2 in the middle row, 1 in the front, all tightly pushed together.  The cups are on either end of ping pong table, or on 2 separate tables about 15 feet apart
of you don't have a ping pong table.

  2. Water Cup.  There is cup of warm water to dip the ball in, in the event that the ball picks up something unpleasant off of the floor.

  3. Singles or Doubles (same rules, if you're playing doubles partners rotate shots and drinks)

  4. Lobs only

  5. Bounces off of anything count.  As soon as the ping pong ball hits something, you can smack it away so it won't bounce in.

  6. Drinks occur right after the shot is made.  You can't shoot back until your drink is drunk.

  7. Rebuttals - After the last cup is made, the team behind gets 2 shots (one per partner) to try and rebutt.

  8. Money ball.  This one is definitely different.  We play with 2 balls.  One is white, one is yellow.  One partner shoots the white ball, the other shoots the yellow ball.  If you make the yellow ball, you get it right back and retain your turn.  You keep getting it back as long as you make it.  Teams decide which player wants to throw their money ball.  You can rotate
back and forth between throwing the white ball or the money ball.  Whoever is on a roll typically should throw the money ball.

  9. Blowing.  If the ball is spinning around the cup and not yet touching the beer, female players can attempt to blow it out of the cup.  Male players can not blow the ball out of the cup in the event it is spinning.

  10. Streaking.  If one team didn't make a shot the entire game, first they  finish the other teams' beers.  Then they proceed to take off their clothes and streak 1 time around the house/apartment.

These are the University of Virginia rules, where we take our beer pong seriously.  A lot of frats/apartments have rooms dedicated to the game, and it is called "the pong room".  The room is usually decorated with job rejection letters....etc

These rules are quite similar throughout most colleges in Virginia (I've seen the same at Virginia Tech and James Madison, and in Washington DC.  The money ball is a UVA rule...haven't seen that one anywhere else.

Bounce Pong

2 players on each side...10 cups about half way filled up with beer on each side each side is about 3-4 feet apart...looks like this

o                                    o
  o                               o
o  o                          o     o
  o  o<-- 3 feet ---> o   o
o  o                          o     o
  o                              o
o                                    o

Object is to bounce the ping pong ball into one of the cups but u must be behind ur set of cups, each player rotates, u must stand behind ur cups and u must release the ball behind the table, if the ball lands in a cup then 1 of the other players form the team must drink it(the 2 rotate).

Once 1 teams cup r all gone then that team looses, so the point is to make the ball into ur opposing players cups and knock all the cups out, once a ball is bounced in a cup the cup is removed, each team has 1 chance to rearrange the cups they r trying to bounce into.

Your friends in Central PA

First put 6 cups in a  triangle formation.

The rules are as followed:

Object: Throw a ping pong ball into opponents cup

  1. Throw ball into any cup, opposing team player must drink that cup.

  2. Bounce the ball into cup, the opposing team player must drink two cup, but the opposing team may swat it away if fast enough.

  3. Bounce off the ceiling into a cup the opposing team players must drink four cups of beer.

  4. If a team member throws and makes the last cup of opposing team. The opposing team has a redemption shot, where he throws until he misses the shot.

  5. Opposing team may throw the ball hard enough to knock a cup over if so that is additional cup of beer.

  6. If your good enough like me and my beer pong partners, you can become a member of the decade club. Win ten games in consecutive order!!!!

  7. Must be wash cups, incase ball hits the floor. If you don't wash your balls, it is one cup penalty.

  8. If you miss an opponents cup you must have a penalty cup at your side, you must chug this beer. Everytime you miss!!! (This makes for an interesting game)

  9. The point of our rules, is to have good time drinking, without anyone getting hurt, but still get drunk, very drunk.

Danforth Lane Rules

  1. Cups are located 12-18 inches from the back edge of the table

  2. If playing doubles, cups are on the center line, if fours, cups are centered in the respective quandrant (beer stains on table should help with location).

  3. Players are not allowed to strike the ball until it has passed the cups (also known as the no defense rule).

  4. If the ball hits the cup, person whose cup was hit takes one sip.

  5. If the ball lands in the cup, person whose cup the ball is in drinks all remaining beer in cup.  Ball cannot be removed first.

  6. Player stays on table until someone puts a ball in their cup (or they pass out).

  7. Cannot hit opponents cup, or put in opponents cup on serve.

  8. Ball is in play unless it has hit a cup or gone in a cup, or in the net.

  9. Play continues until ball is in play.  There is no limit as to the number of bounces (the ball can even roll off the table and be hit on the bounce off the floor).

Philly Style

What u need:

2 balls
2 teams of 2 people
big table
a lot of beer
14 cups

Rules

  1. Line cups up 6 on each side (other 2 are to wash balls off)  - line up starting with 3 then 2 then 1 kind of like bowling pins

  2. U can either bounce it in or throw it in the cup

  3. Ball goes in cup opposite team has to drink the cup

  4. Both members of the team shoot , if both players on the same team make it in they get the balls back and get a chance to do it again.  whoever has cups left wins the game and the winner stays.

  5. Side notes - after 2 bounces u may block the shot and u are aloud to try to blow the ball out of the cup with your mouth. if a cup is knocked off the table the opposing team has to drink it .

Some guy named Chris added these

  1. No paddles

  2. Each team has 6cups on each side and they are set up like bowling pins

  3. You can throw the ball directly into the cup or you can bounce it in but after the second bounce it is legal to grab the ball

  4. If you make a cup they have to drink it all before it is there turn to throw

Other rules:

  1. Make it take it (you keep throwing until you miss)

  2. Air ball (if you miss the table completely you have to drink a cup of there choice

  3. After the last cup is made the other team has to drink all the cups left on table

  4. 2 beers are used for each team

High arc shots? Games to 4? Oh, come now...
Here are the rules from a school in Lafayette - the spiritual birthplace of beer pong.

Cup location - singles - paddles length in from rear on center line. doubles - paddles length in from rear and one in from each side

Points/Drinks - A hit of the cup by the opponent is a point - one drink taken. A dunk or a knockover are 5 points each - fill up and chug. 5 drinks to a cup. Cups are 12oz. plastic - F&K brand is good.

Misc. drinks - double fault, hitting yourself, hitting opponent on a serve - a drink is taken but not a point (called an "over" and kept track of separately instead). Likewise dunking or knocking yourself over or dunking or knocking over an opponent on serve is fill up and chug for you - and 5 over, no points.

Drinking - each drink should be relatively proportional to give your opponent a chance to knock you over, but on your last drink left, beer can not be higher than ball's height in the cup.

Score - Play is to 21. Must win by 2.

Serving - a valid serve hits both sides at least once - anything else in the middle (hitting wall, net, extra bounces etc.) does not affect serve's legality. After any drink (point or over) the person or team who drank serves.

Play - Virtually anything is in play - including all surfaces (floor, walls, ceiling). Only one hit per time on your side of the table/your side of the net. You cannot hit the ball on the table till it passes a line even with your cup. Off the table it need only pass onto your side of the net. You may never block the ball from hitting your cup, though you may blow it out of the way (or fan it with the paddle). Off the table you may block the ball with your body, but not advance it forward with your body (to the side is okay). Play continues till a drink occurs or till you are given the ball back to serve if you did not hit your opponents side of the table with your shot (your opponent may still play this as previously said, but he doesn't have to) or if you decide to serve it yourself (for example, your opponent did hit your side and how the ball is dead in a corner of the floor, and you have no shot you care to take). If you hit the ball and it bounces off the rear wall of your opponent and comes back to your side, you may hit it again. If it didn't make it to the rear wall and comes back without your opponent touching it, you can not play it, and serve is determined by who last did not hit the table (opponenet's side of the table that is).

Options - If your opponent hits a bad first or second serve, or hits himself or in some other way gives himself an 'over', and you have a playable shot, you may call "Option" before hitting the ball, and then do so. Play continues from there. The over or bad serve is erased (no drink taken). Special case - If you have one drink left and double fault, your opponent has the option of whether you drink/take the over or not. If he elects for you not to drink (what is typically done) and you hit a third consecutive bad serve, you must drink half of what was in your cup, then keep serving with the "bad serve counter" reset from there.

Doubles - No need to rotate shots or sides - play is same as in singles. All drinks are done equally by both teammates (i.e. - on a point, both players of a team must drink).

THIS is the game!

Triangle Beer Pong without Paddles

We use 15 cups on each side, aligned in rows...5 in the back, 4 right in
front, 3 in front of that, then 2, then one...

All cups must be touching, so it forms a triangle. Each cup is filled about halfway with beer.

There is a team of two on each side of the table and no paddles are used. Instead, one team starts the game by each person tossing a ping pong ball and trying to get it into one of the cups.

If you get the ball into one of the opposing teams cups, one member of the opposing team drinks the beer in that cup, team members alternate who drinks the beer every time the other team gets a ball in their cup.

Once the beer is drunk from that cup, the cup is placed aside and out of the triangle. Once the team has taken their two shots at the cups, the other team shoots back, and it goes on like that.

The point of the game is to eliminate all of the other teams cups. The shot must be direct, and cannot bounce off the table and then go into the cup. Also, if both members of a team make their shots consecutively, the 2 balls are returned to that team and they get another chance.

We used to play by your rules, but found this game to be much more competitive and fun.

    A Shitload of Brew
    Your drinking hat

How we do it:
6 cups per side, set up in a triangle-filled evenly with 3 beers.  2 wash cups.  Winning team starts with the balls.  If both shots are made-the ball come back to them.  If a shot goes in a cup but is rolling around the inside of the cup you can try to blow it out, and as long as it doesn't touch the beer, it doesn't count as a hit.  Once a team hits the final shot, the opposing team has the option of shooting ONLY as many balls as it took to win the game (If the winning shot was hit by player 1 on team A, they only get 1 shot, and if it was hit by player 2 they get 2 shots).

2. Fill each cup to the first line. This is exactly 1/3 of a beer, hence each
beer should fill 3 cups.

3. Get a partner, this is a 2 on 2 game.

4. The team to shoot first in the first game of the night is decided by
rock-paper-siccors. The best out of 3 games wins. In every subsquent game,
the team who won the last game has first shot.

5. The team with the balls shoots(tosses) at the opposing team's cups. If
they make a cup, the opponents drink that cup. If they make both shots, they
get both balls back and shoot again untill they miss one or both of their
shots.

6. Before the next team shoots, they must drink all the cups that have been
made against them. Each teamate only drinks from their own pyramid. If you
shoot without finishing your beer, you forefit your shot and give the other
team the ball.

7. When a team makes their opponent's last cup, the game is over, there are no
rebutals because those are for girls as well. The winning team stays on the
table and the losing team signs up to play again.

Aditional Rules:

1. No blowing the ball out of the cup if it is spinning in the cup.

2. You may smack the ball away after it bounces once off of anything.
However, if you smack the ball and it still goes in your cup, that counts as a
made shot.

3. NO RERACKS - leave the cup formations how they are.

4. If you think one of your opponents cups are below the first line on the
cup, you may call that cup out after you hit the rim of it and miss. If the
beer is low, they must drink that cup. However, if you call the cup out and
it is above the line, then drink one of your cups.

5. In order for someone to take a "guest shot," everyone in the game must
agree for this to happen.

Conn School Rules

Materials:
1 large table
26 large solo cups
4 people (2 teams of 2)
2 pingpong balls

1.  Divide into teams of two.  Set up 6 cups in front of each person
(there will be four 6racks on the table) two on each side. They are set
up in a triangle formation with three in back two in the middle and one
cup in the front all tightly together.   The other two are used for
water cups.

2.  New team on the table gets one ball to throw to start off with. Once
that is thrown the previous winners have both balls after and attempt to
shoot.  If it is the first game decided who starts.

3.  You can shoot at either rack on the opposite side of the table but
it is proper ediquette to shoot at the rack directly in front of you.

4.  If you sink a ball in a cup, who evers cup that is must remove it
and drink it before their next throw.  If the other person on your team
sinks thier ball in the same cup (double cupping) then the game is over.
That is why it is important for the person to remove the cup as soon as
it is hit.

5.  If both people on a team sink both their shots, they get the balls
back and another chance to shoot, until only one person makes it or they
both miss.

6.  Each of the 6 racks are racked at 4 (diamond shape), three (triangle
shape), two (one in front of the other), and one.  At anytime if their
are a total of 6 cups on one side (as in 6 cups have been hit by the
other team).  Then you switch to one 6 cup center rack.  You will rack
this as stated before.

7.  To win you must either double cup it, or sink the ball in all of the
other teams cups.  Which ever team looses all their cups first, gets one
rebuttle shot (really good for the close games).  If they sink this
shot, then the other team must drink that beer.  If the other team has
just one cup and it is hit with the rebuttle shot, then you go to over
time.  The loosers must drink the rest of the winners beer.

8.  Overtime:  the setup is decided between the players who are playing,
they can play another game, but with more beer in each cup, one six rack
with three beers in it, or one three cup rack with a beer per cup.

As soon as the ball hits something (person, table, cup) it can be
swatted away, but if it bounces into a cup after touching something, it
still counts.

There is no blowing the ball out of the cup, even if you are a girl.

If a cup is knocked over and when you pick it up there is still beer in
it, it goes back on the table (so pick it up fast).  If there is no beer
in it, it is taken away.  If it is overtime, then it is put back on the
table (if there is beer in it) but a full beer is added to the cup, even
if you have less in the others.

Washington 2305B NAVY SUBMARINE BEER PONG STYLE

Materials:
. 14 cups
. 4 ping pong balls
. elevendy billion beers
. 2-4 players
. Loud music

Rules:
There are two styles to play with that should be decided on at the
beginning of the game.

  • Make it take it - If a player makes a shot, the ball is returned for another
    shot till the player misses.

  • Team Play - Both players have to sink a shot in to return the ball back for another
shot. Make it take it does not apply.

  • Picking teams -
If players have conflicts with who will be on what team, names are pulled out of a hat. The first two names are on a team, the second two names are on a team, and so on and so forth. After a team wins a tournament or series, names will be drawn again for new teams.

  • Two pyramids of 6 cups on each side of the table, with washing cups on
either side for when the ball hits the ground.

  • To start out players from team A and B say "1, 2, 3 shoot" and throw one
ball each. You can choose to hold your ball and wait for the opposing team
to shoot their ball. You do not have to drink if a cup is sunk with a
starting ball. First team to make a shot goes first.

  • Winning team always shoots first, unless you are playing one on one, in
which case you shoot for first shot every game played.

  • After the starting shot each team shoots 2 balls at a time, if a cup is
sunk the opposing team must drink immediately. If a shot is made, the ball
is returned to the player until he/she misses.

  • The player must finish all beer dealt to him/her, before throwing the
    ball.

  • Rearrange - 4 cup is a diamond, 3 cup is a triangle, 2 cups right in front
    of each other.

  • Live ball - If the ball bounces off the table, or on the rim of a cup, or
any other object you are allowed to swat the ball away.

  • No blowing. Only girls are allowed to blow.

  • If someone knocks a beer over, they drink the rest of the beer and chug a
    new beer too.

  •  If someone swats a players shot they automatically throw the game for
    there team and are LOSERS!!

  • If a player throws the ball into there own cup, they drink that cup and
    lose there turn.

  •  If a player drops the ball twice while attempting to shoot, they lose
    their turn.

  •  If a player shoots with his/her foot over the throwing line, they lose
their turn and drink one of there own cups off the table.

  •  Once a player is up on the line to shoot, they have 15 sec's to shoot, or
"delay of game is called", and that person loses there turn

  • Taunting and name calling is approved. Players can wave hands over cups
but may not cover the view of the cups.

  • Redemption - After a team has sunk all 6 cups, the opposing team gets one
shot a piece to make in the rest of the cups. If the player makes it the
ball is returned for another shot. If losing team makes the rest of there
cups in one turn, you go into overtime. Three cups are placed on each side
of the table, filling the three cups with a beer per side.

  • Losing team always gets beer for the winning team.

  • Anyone who wins a tournament takes over the title "Beer pong pimp master
    of the world".

Cleveland, OH – it is referred to as “Bucha House Rules”

  • Each team begins with 10 cups arranged in a triangle. (4 in the back, 3 in the next row, 2, then 1 at the top) Filled up 1/3 of the way with either beer or liquor.
  • Typically, the two teams will shoot to see who goes first.
  • Once a cup is made, it’s content’s must be drank by the opposing team (Whether it be beer or occasionally hard liquor) and then removed from the table.
  • Players continue to shoot at each other’s cups until none remain. The losing team must drink the remaining cups from the winning team.
  •  At any time during the game, a team may request to have the opposing team’s cups rearranged in any formation they choose.  This is only allowed once.
  • If a ball is bounced, it counts as 2 cups. However, the opposing team may knock the ball away after it bounces off the table once.
  • If a ball hits off of a player and falls into a cup, it counts.
  • If two members of an opposing team make both of they’re shots, the balls are returned to that team. There is no limit how many times balls may be returned to them.
  • After the last cup is made, the opposing team has two shots to keep the game going. This is called a “rebuttal”. If that team makes one cup, both balls are returned to the original team and the game continues.
  • Sometimes a ball will ring around a cup and if blown on, will bounce out. Only girls may do this.
  • Talking shit (as always) is strongly encouraged
  • Any cup knocked over counts. However, players may not deliberately knock over a cup. (Nolan Ryan rule)
  •  That’s the jest of it. Since talking shit is part of the game, if you come up to Cleveland, beware the “Bucha/Price dream team” (AKA Magic and Bird) One Love.
