Final Rules for WSOBP IVTM

Every year, we re-evaluate the official rules of The World Series of Beer PongTM, and make changes and clarifications as we feel necesary. These tweaks are based on countless amounts of time spent thinking about every aspect of the game of Beer Pong, as well as the opinions of the Beer Pong community at large. We have finalized the official rules for The World Series of Beer Pong IV (WSOBP IV), which can be found here, but would like to spend a minute discussing all of the changes and clarifications that have occurred since shooWSOBP III.

This list should not be relied upon for full interpretation of the rules. All participants are expected to read the rules in full before arriving in Las Vegas.

We can organize the changes to the written rules into three general categories:

1. Changes in Tournament Structure and Format
2. Clarifications of rules/procedures already in place
3. Rule Changes

Changes in Tournament Structure and Format

A. Unlike WSOBP III, there will be no 'divisions' at WSOBP IV. Each team will play 12 games during prelims against 12 random teams. Final ranking will be based solely on overall ranking

B. All forfeits will count for a cup differential of 3. It has been 2 in all previous years.

C. There will be overtime in all games played during WSOBP IV. All games have the potential to go on indefinitely. Please note that if a game is running long due to overtime play, we reserve the right to move that game to a table in a separate area at our discretion.

D. Any game that goes into overtime will be counted as a cup differential of +1 for the winner. The logic here is, you should not be penalized for making redemption. If you go into 5 overtimes, and then lose the 5th overtime by 3 cups, that's still a better performance than losing the game in regulation by one cup. Please note however that your scorecard will keep track of 1) how many overtimes your game has gone into and 2) how many cups were left at the end of the final overtime. The latter information will not affect ranking, except to the extent it may be used as an ultimate tiebreaker.

E. The final day has changed dramatically. You can view the final bracket here (pdf). In a nutshell, 128 teams will make it to day 3, and there will be a 64-team double elimination bracket at the end. The top 32 teams will get in automatically, the next 32 teams will have to win one game to get in, and the next 64 teams will have to win two games. Just look at the bracket.

2. Clarifications of rules/procedures already in place

A. The rules have been clarified to state that all objects on the table are part of game play. This means that if a ball hits a bottle on the side of the table and then goes in a live cup, that cup is counted as a hit.

B. We have added a conduct rule at the end. This is common sense: If you act like an asshole, we reserve the right to throw you out.

C. We added a clause that says something to the effect of "final interpretation of rules to be left up to the refs". Self-explanatory.

D. It appears that somewhere along the line this part got dropped from the written rules, but: There are always mid-turn re-racks. I.e. if the first player hits a shot which brings it down to six cups, reformation should happen before the next player shoots. Also, all cups are to be removed immediately after being hit. If you shoot and hit a cup that has already been hit, its your fault.

E. In general, if you knock over your own cup, it is counted as sunk. However, I think we always intended to make an exception for the times when you knock over your cup while re-racking. This has been added.

F. If you knock over your own cup, it is counted as sunk (sorry to have to repeat that). This cup should be removed immediately. If removal of the cup results in a re-rack, that re-rack should be performed immediately. However, the cup will not count as being hit for the purposes of rollbacks. In other words, if you knock over your own cup in the middle of the other teams turn, it will be treated like that cup was never there. The other team still has to 'make' two shots to get a rollback.

G. If you knock over your last cup...well...you're an idiot. Seriously, this is the World Series of Beer Pong...just don't do it. However, if you do happen to make this atrocious blunder, you will get redemption. If there are multiple cups on the other side, you will get 'Unlimited-1-ball redemption". If there is one cup on the other side, you get two chances to hit redemption, no matter where the balls are at the time of your stupidity. But seriously, don't do it.

3. Rule Changes

A. Important: In all overtime games, the first two shots will be taken by the 'Dominant' team. The Dominant team is the one who hit last cup first. This rule affects all prelim and finals games.

B. We have removed the 'two feet on the ground' rule. It is virtually impossible to enforce, and isn't really justifiable. You can shoot standing on your penis if it make you happy.

C. We have disallowed the act of moving of the cups out of your way to shoot. If you want to lean and tilt the cups, fine, but you cant move them away from the edge of the table first.

D. Our general redemption rules are the same, save one exception: In the case where a team needs to make redemption with three cups remaining on the other side, the team must alternate the first two shots, but may choose either player to take the third shot.

See you fuckers in Vegas....

You must complete your WSOBP IVTM Signup by December 5th

We have put the finishing touches on our system, and are now ready to have everyone complete their signups. Below are instructions on how to complete each portion of the signup process. Please note that you must have the signup process completed by December 5th so we can get the rooming list to the Flamingo.

Completing payment

Please note that all balances must be paid by December 5th.

1. Log into your BPONG account using the ‘sign in’ button at the top right corner of BPONG.COM.
2. Point your mouse to ‘My BPONG’ (also in the top right corner), and choose ‘Signups’.
3. You will see your WSOBP IV signup listed. Click the blue circle with the letter ‘I’ in the middle (view signup details). You will then be able to pay the remaining balance of your signup.

Using a promocode

This is for people that have won Satellite tournaments and were issued a promocde. There are two possibilities:

Option #1: If you signed up for WSOBP IV before winning your Satellite Tournament, you can get a refund of your payment (up to $500).

1. Log into your BPONG account using the ‘sign in’ button at the top right corner of BPONG.COM.
2. Point your mouse to ‘My BPONG’ (also in the top right corner), and choose ‘Signups’.
3. You will see your WSOBP signup listed. Select it.
4. Click the red circle with the green checkmark on it.  You will then be able to enter your promocode.
5. Once you have entered your promocode, we will manually credit your account for the value of the base WSOBP package (generally $500) and refund your credit card.

Option #2: You have not signed up yet

1. Go to http://www.bpong.com/wsobp and complete the signup process.
2. When it asks you for a promocode, enter the code you were given. This will give you a $500 discount for the tournament (which will make the base package free).

Create a Team/Assign Team to WSOBP IV

Once you and your partner have both signed up, you will need to link up as a team. One player will need to create a team, and then ‘invite’ the other player.

To create a team:

1. Log into your BPONG account using the ‘sign in’ button at the top right corner of BPONG.COM.
2. Point your mouse to ‘My BPONG’ (also in the top right corner), and choose ‘Teams’.
3. Select ‘New Team’.
4. You can upload a team image, choose a team name, and enter a description for your team.
5. Make sure that ‘people in team’ equals 2.
6. When you click ‘submit’, it will give you the option of inviting another member to the team. You can search by username or by email. Once you invite a player, they will receive an email instructing them on how to accept.

Once  the team has been created, it can be assigned to WSOBP IV. For this to happen, the team must have two confirmed players (i.e. the second player must have already accepted the invitation), and both players must have already signed up for the WSOBP.

To assign your team to WSOBP IV (only one player has to do this):

1. Log into your BPONG account using the 'sign in' button at the top right corner of BPONG.COM.
2. Click on ‘Teams’ under ‘My BPONG’
3. Click on the ‘Team Assignments’ icon next to the team name (it’s the BPONG cup with a green ‘plus’ sign).
4. Assign the team to WSOBP IV

Create a Room/ Select Rooming preferences

Once you and your partner have signed up (or once you have signed up if you are getting your own room), you will need to create a 'room'.

1. Log into your BPONG account using the ‘sign in’ button at the top right corner of BPONG.COM.
2. Point your mouse to ‘MY BPONG’ and choose ‘Signups’.
3. You will see your WSOBP signup listed.
4. Click the blue circle with the letter ‘I’ in the middle ('view signup details').
5. Click on the blue button that says ‘Create room’.
6. You will then have the opportunity to invite your teammate to the room (if you went with double occupancy), and you’ll also be able to choose smoking/non-smoking and 1 king bed vs 2 queens.
7. If you invite your teammate to the room, he/she will receive an email from BPONG.COM with instructions on how to accept the invitation

Publisher X Teams Up With BPONG.COM For Officially Licensed Beer Pong - BPONG 2009 EditionTM

Highly competitive drinking sport taking campuses and country by storm

San Francisco, California - October 9, 2008 - Publisher X, a global publisher of digitally downloadable games and interactive software, announced today an official partnership with BPONG.COM, the official governing body of Beer Pong and founders of The World Series of Beer PongTM(the largest Beer Pong tournament in the world), for its upcoming title Beer Pong - BPONG 2009 EditionTM for the Apple® iPhoneTM and iPod® touch. The game launching later this year will be available for download exclusively on the Apple App Store for use on iPhone and iPod touch.

"Our game is shaping up to be the end-all Beer Pong experience on the App Store, and our partnership with BPONG.COM provides the perfect vehicle to cross promote our brands to a wide audience of consumers," said Doug Kennedy, co-founder of Publisher X. "BPONG.COM hosts the official World Series of Beer Pong each year, and our game will be the most compelling Beer Pong experience on the iPhone, so this partnership makes a lot of sense."

Held each year in Las Vegas, The World Series of Beer Pong (WSOBP) is the largest Beer Pong tournament in the world. Last year's tournament, The WSOBP III, had over 600 players competing for a $50,000 grand prize. The WSOBP IV is scheduled to take place at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas from January 1-5, 2009 with $50,000 on the line.

"As the promoters and creators of The World Series of Beer Pong, we don't give out our official seal of approval lightly," said Billy Gaines, co-founder of BPONG.COM. "The Publisher X iPhone game is the real deal and as close as you can get to playing a game of Beer Pong without balls, cups and beer. We look forward to a long relationship with Publisher X."

For those who have been living under a rock for the past decade or so, Beer Pong (also known as "Beirut" in some localized areas) is a highly competitive sporting event, typically played by students on college campuses nationwide. Although there are nearly as many rule sets as there are cheap domestic beers, a game following BPONG.COM's official established rules is played with two two-player teams taking turns throwing Beer Pong balls (aka table tennis balls) across a table in an effort to land the ball in one of ten plastic cups partially filled with beer on the opposite end of the table. When a cup is made, the opposing team removes the cup from the game, and the first team to clear all of  its opponent's cups wins the game.

Beer Pong - BPONG 2009 Edition will be the definitive Beer Pong simulation game, and will be available for download from the Apple App Store later this year.

WSOBP III Champions Jeremy Hughes and Michael OrrA Little Post From Chauffeuring the Fat Kid

What up all,

We just wanted to say a few words to all of the loyal beer pong players, tossing bpong balls all over the country, and other countries as well (not to leave out our friendly neighbors to the north). Great tournament this year to everyone. We are so psyched to have won. It is unbelievable. To come out on top over all of the other great teams out there is a phenomenal feeling.

To the IWC:
You boys are sick players. Top ten all three years, that's nuts. You guys seemed cool, too bad we didn't get to play some games outside of the tournament as well. The first two games you guys shot against us (one before the final match, where you put us into the loser's bracket) you couldn't miss. That shit was amazing. If a four cup run was made against us in the finals to come back, a little push would have been taken from our poop as well. We were grateful for the chance to play you two in the finals though, since you handed us a loss earlier that day. Hope to see you boys in the finals next year as well.

To the rest, as far as us being entitled the best in the world for a year, a few words. There are a lot of teams out there that have the potential to win. You can tell who they are too, because they continually seem to finish up near the top (IWC, Kobe, Smashing Time, etc...). The only way one of us can come out on top is by hitting at the right time, and missing at the right time. It is kind of like poker in that sense. You do everything you can to elevate your game, but if your not hitting at the right time it isn't going to do you any good (i.e. four cups for OT). As it turns out, this was our year.

To address the whole east/west argument over where we are from, a few more words. We grew up playing in Pittsburgh. It is where we learned the game and where we got our sense of competition for it. Personally, when I (Fat Kid) moved to Tucson to go to the UofA, I saw shit for intensity or competition (in the beer pong arena). It took me months to accidentally stumble upon the Pi Kapp’s, who ended up having a bunch of good players to play with, not to mention plenty of tables to play on. It was tough to even find money games for Christ's sake. We now live in San Diego though, and have found a good circle of competitive teams to play.

Thanks to the boys at Socalbeerpong.com, competition is really coming up on the west coast. They run tournaments and a league; they are doing a lot for the game out here. If the teams out here weren’t amazing shooters we wouldn't have been able to keep our game sharp. Just look at the teams in the top ten this year from SoCal: us, purefilth, kobe, and those are only the ones we can think of off the top of our heads. Of course, the east coast is always running strong as well. We need some teams representing the Midwest and perhaps even the Dirty South, haha. That would really get things going.

Thanks to all the SoCal teams for the competition and friendship the past year. We slapped hands with team Kobe before every game in the final day to say “let’s do this”, which is really awesome because we knew we were both going for the same goal but still wanted each other to play the best we could.

Thanks to Tight Rack for all the support as well. Last year we became good friends with Steven and Reed the first night, and partied hard with them every night there on out. They were a big cheering section for us last year and it feels good to succeed when your boys are right there watching. Thanks to J and Flink (team Quakerville USA) for coming this year (they were the guys who used to kick our asses way back when they were teaching us the game). They made it through half of the last day but the old age got to them, haha. We also want to give props to Smashing Time and tall Shawn from Shawn^2. We had the privilege of playing them the night before the final day, and they really put some fire under our asses…we needed that.

There are a lot of really good teams nowadays, and at any given time it could be anyone’s win. We’re glad that the sport we played during school (played more than studying) gave us the best day of our lives. I hope there is more to come . . .

To all the Beer Pong players out there – we all are who we are because:

"Most people go to parties and play beer pong, we go to play beer pong and there’s parties."

Day 2 Standings

--Instead of us giving you updates, we're giving you a first person player's perspective this year from The World Series of Beer Pong. Note: Quick and dirty stats are up from Day 1 in the previous Blog Post.--

Author: The Champ (www.challengethechamp.com)
Team: Saddam's Model Home
Current Record: 5-1

Day 1 of World Series of Beer Pong III at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas in the books. The venue is quite an upgrade from last year when the tournament was held in Mesquite, NV aka the homeless man's Vegas. Located a stones throw from the airport (if you could throw a stone 60 miles) , Mesquite had a quiet charm, dirt cheap prices, and suspect running water. I was pleasantly surprised when our team limo driver dropped us off in front of a sprawling building that rivaled the luxury of a strip hotel. Most major event-site managers are still a little wary an event that could be considered to promote drinking. It's an obvious concern since alcohol advertising is banned in America and zero hundred people have drank themselves to death playing pong.

After traveling 3000 miles it never feels good to win your first game. It feels even worse to have an undefeated streak. So we strategically lost on purpose in Game 1. I missed four in a row in Game 2 and was about 85% certain we were going 0-12 in the tournament. I asked my partner The Freak if I should make a cup. Exasperated, he replied, "That'd be nice." We decided we had to go back to our strategy of making lots of cups. It's only when we deviate from this that we get into trouble. We won our next five to bring Saddam's Model Home to a respectable Day 1 record of 5-1. The wins weren't very authoritative, but the day did have its bright spots. The Freak was asked by seven people how tall he was (6'Cool which is nice because no one ever asks him that. Several other people commented on how his height and lean seemingly allowed him to "drop the ball in the freekin cup!!!". That was also nice because he's never heard that before.

The Film 101 Crew, who produced the upcoming smash hit documentary on WSOBPII, put down their cameras and took to the rectangle with mixed results. Certain media outlets have reported Kyle and Nic are sitting squarely in last place. "It's a dubious honor," said Nic, "but an honor nonetheless. And like my father always said, when you get honor, stay honor." Dave and Jimmy put up a yeoman's 2-4 effort, while Josh Otten and night time TV star Dan Lindsay shocked all of Las Vegas with a 4-2 performance.

While Saddam's Model Home and the Film 101 Crew were floundering in mediocrity, our cohorts from New Jersey and Long Island were destroying the competition. Defending champ Tone Vasillatos and Ron Hamilton both helped their teams go 6-0. Those two are so quiet you barely notice them. If only they would play with a little more emotion, they could really have a future in the game. Other defending world champ Neil Guerrero, or "The Gold Standard", as he is known around my condo, picked up right where he left off with the God-like play that won him 20 grand a year ago. Zach and Screech, Don't Move I'll Get a Towel, Strictly Business, Our Balls Your Cup, and several others I'm probably forgetting all posted 5+ win days. It's nice to see the teams you battle with on a weekly basis back home making a mockery of the national competition.

Day 1 is in the books and a roaring success for my NY/NJ boys. But that's like saying if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a bus. The hard lesson The Freak and I learned last year after pulling a muscle patting ourself on the back after Day 2 is that the prelims don't mean a thing. Just get to Day 3 and anything can happen. That's when the checks are cut, when gold standards are minted, and when Ron Hamilton will put his head through a brick wall if he loses.

Christmas has come and gone, and New Years Eve is on the way, but there is only one thing on our minds: THE THIRD ANNUAL WORLD SERIES OF BEER PONG, AND $50,000, BITCHES! In one week, a new World Champion will take home the title and the check for the big fifty.

Hell yeah . . . For those of you who couldn't make it out this year, you have our most sincere condolences. For those of you who are coming out, here are a few things to remember. Please read this carefully.

Before going any further, however, we'd like to make one point that we will repeat throughout the event that we know does not even need to be said. The two previous WSOBP™ events have been very successful. Part of this has been because we have worked our asses off to put on one hell of an event for you and to promote beer pong in a positive light. The other reason that things have been so successful is because you, the participants, have been very respectful of the event, the venue, and of each oher. We cannot thank you enough for this.

Moving to this year, we therefore request that every person at the event helps us run the perfect event again. There is a lot of attention on this event (big, big people are coming to see what this "beer pong" thing is all about). We've all been fools when drinking at one time or another (especially me (Billy)), so let's help watch out for each other and come together as true beer pong fans/players to show the general public what this sport is really all about. Also remember that we are guests, so we ask that you be respectful of the facilities and the South Point staff.

Now, on to the rest of the shit:

  1. HOTEL CHECK-IN
    • South Point guests may check-in to their rooms starting at 3:00 pm Jan. 1st
South Point Hotel and Casino is located at 9777 Las Vegas Boulevard South.

    • Grandview guests may check-in to their rooms starting at 4:00 pm Jan. 1st
The Grandview Hotel is located at 9940 Las Vegas Boulevard South.

  2. WSOBP™ CHECK-IN
In addition to hotel check-in, all teams must check-in with WSOBP™ staff in person on Jan. 1 between 4:00 pm and 10:00 pm at the Registration Desk in South Point Casino's Event Center. Both you and your teammate must check in. Each person must have his/her drivers license, passport, or other state-issued ID (valid and unexpired) on-hand so that we can scan it. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule.

    When
you check in you will recieve a WSOBP™ Team Packet which will include, among other things:
    • Event Program (including schedule)
    • A copy of The WSOBP™ Full Rules (which includes the Quick Rules)
    • Sponsorship materials

We will have BPONG™ tables, cups, balls, and other merchandise on sale at the registration area. Note, we will be selling tables new and in the box for $120 throughout the event. Starting at the end of the second day, however, we will begin selling off tables used in the event for a reduced price (probably $80).

  3. LATE ARRIVALS
If you will be arriving after 10:00 pm on Jan. 1 you must fill out the Late Arrival Form. If you do not check in with us or notify us that you will be late, we will assume that you are a no-show, and you will not be scheduled into the tournament.

  4. SPECTATORS
Spectators are welcome and encouraged, but they must be 21+ (no exceptions, so don't ask). Ticket cost is $12/person/day and they may be purchased online or in person at the South Point Box Office. If you do not want to stand in line and want to make sure that you have tickets before the event sells out, we strongly encourage you to purchase your tickets online ahead of time. Hint: unlike Mesquite, NV where we're lucky to have an occasional cactus blow in, we're expecting a potentially large crowd, and we can only allow a limited number of people, as per the fire marshall's approval.

  5. GAME TIME
All players should report to the Event Center (South Point Exhibit Hall C and D) no later than 10:30 am on Jan. 2, 3, and 4. Tournament games will begin promptly at 11:00 am each day. You will be carded upon entry so bring your ID's. Teams willplay 6 games per day for days one and two. You will be given a schedule of each day's games so you know where to be at what time. Because of the size of this event, you must be at your table at the scheduled time. There will be no make-ups if you miss a game - it will be a forfeit. This goes without saying, but we won't hold up the entire tournament for you so do not to miss your games. This information will also be listed in the event program.

Good luck everyone, and may the best team win! Let's get it on.

Duncan, Billy, and the rest of the BPONG™ & WSOBP™ Staff.
