  • Beast of the East:

    Location:
    McFadden’s
    Citizens Bank Park

    Date and Time:
    Saturday September, 19th 2009
    Registration starts at 1pm
    Tournament starts at 1:30pm

    Rules:
    WSOPB Rules

    Buy-in:
$50 per person to buy into the tournament.

    Payouts:
Each member of the winning 16 person Squad will receive a portion of the prize pool.  Player’s individual win/loss record will be recorded as well as the cup differential.  The players will then be ranked from 1 to 16 and paid out accordingly.  For reference the payouts will be as follows:
    1st -  $650 9th   - $200
    2nd - $550 10th - $200
    3rd -  $450 11th - $200
    4th -  $400 12th - $200
    5th -  $300 13th - $100
    6th -  $300 14th - $100
    7th -  $300 15th - $100
    8th -  $300 16th - $100
    Format:

There will be 6 Squads, each with 16 players.  Every round the Squad will be broken up into 8 teams of 2.  Players will not play with the same partner twice with the exception of a tiebreaker round.  There will be 5 rounds of Squad vs. Squad round robin play.  Squads will be seeded based on overall win/loss record (over 80 games) and cup differential and placed in a 6 Squad single elimination bracket.   The 2 Squads with the best overall record and cup differential will receive byes in the first round.

    Preliminary Rounds:
Each Squad will be broken up into 8 teams that will be picked at random.  Each of these teams will play one game against 2 different teams from the other Squad.  Each round will end up with a Squad playing 16 total games per round for a total of 80 games.  Squads will then be seeded 1 through 6 for the final tournament.

    Single elimination tournament:
Squads will be placed into a 6 Squad single elimination tournament with the top 2 seeds receiving byes.  After the first round, the Squads will be reseeded so that the lowest remaining seed will face the #1 seed (like the NFL playoffs).

In Each round the Squad will be broken up into 8 teams of 2.  They will be matched against one team from the opposing Squad.  The first Squad to win 5 games will be the winner of the round.  In the event of a 4-4 tie, there will be a one game tiebreaker.  Each Squad’s team will consist of one player chosen by your Squad and one chosen by the opposing Squad.
    Ex:
    Squad A vs. Squad B
Squad A chooses a player from Squad B to be on Squad B’s team.
Squad B chooses a player from Squad A to be on Squad A’s team.
Squad A chooses a player from Squad A to be on Squad A’s team.
Squad B chooses a player from Squad B to be on Squad B’s team.

The tournament will continue with this format until a Champion is crowned.

  • Seriously? 80 games to seed a 6 team tournament?
That's a lot of time spent on preliminaries to only have a single elimination bracket.

each player plays 10 games.  and the squads are seeded.  if people are going to travel why not have them get their money's worth in games.

  • It seems like this could end up getting really complicated.

In round 5, for example, lets say we've assembled the first 6 teams for MD now.
That's 12 players and there are 4 players left.

What if I've already played with the other 3 remaining players in the earlier rounds???
Then all my choices for partners break the rules, and the system craps out.

I could see that getting really disorganized with opposing squads and home squads bickering over a resolution to backtrack and recombine all of the teams.

If people are going to travel and play more games, why not have those games actually mean something?

I'd rather have one less round of preliminaries and a double elimination bracket.
Double elim gives everyone more games, just like a round robin would.

as far as the payout for individuals on the winning squad, yes. they mean something.
However, those extra games are based around a payout scale for competing against players from my own MD squad! If we win, and I did better than them in round robin ..etc I get more $.

I'm more concerned about what squad actually wins, and that is entirely based on the single elimination bracket. That's what people are traveling for. Not to compete against my own squad and see if I did better than other MD players, but if MD beats NY in the final bracket or not.

I'm just saying i think the final tournament is a lot more important, and yes preliminaries are nice but not to such excess that we only have time for a single elimination bracket.

  • No matter what format was picked someone would bitch.
My opinion is this is alot better then having random teams drawn out of a hat and put into a large bracket.
I like the idea of team vs team concept.

your talking about all premeir players a game should last no longer then 5 minutes and with 10 plus tables that will fly by.

I wouldnt mind changing the tournamnet round to 8 best of 3's
this way if the opposing teams pulls out a fluke win you have 2 more games to try and redeam yourself before you lose the point for your state.

Mike stepped up and ran it so I'm cool with whatever format he picked.
If for some reason all the captains disagree then maybe consider tweeking something later but from what I know not one captain wrote him with suggestions and it is only 2 and half weeks away.

As far as payouts I'm undecided.  I see both sides of the coin if I shoot lights out ( like I most likely will ) ha then I should deserve more money if I dont lose all day however ..........................it is also a team event so you might want to make it an even payout.
Another thing that my opinion should not matter.

Sean,  Austin was nominated your captain have him email Mike if he opposes something.

  • I think it's great that mike has taken the initiative. I'm not trying to tear him down at all, just offering some constructive feedback.

Some of what I've said is opinion, yes, but also some of it is just mathematics.
With this pairing system a squad can end up in a situation where the last players to form teams have already played with each other before.

    What happens then?
