I think for a mid-week tournament 49 players is a very good turnout for a singles tournament.  It is sometimes difficult to get people to come out to a singles tournament if they are not Pop, Kessler, Deep, etc (neither of which won the tournament).  Many players feel intimidated by the singles factor whereas doubles allows people to feel like they can have more of a chance in the tournament or just have fun with a friend.

Yes there were a lot of first timers there.  Yes some of them mentioned they would probably not be back.  There were a decent amount of the new people that said they had a blast and were asking about our upcoming tournaments.  Some of the people even said while they were signing up that they did not expect to win, but were just playing for the novelty factor/ excuse to stay at the bar for a few more hours.

If he had more space and tables we would have run a consolation tournament for people that went 0-2  or 1-2 and would have given the winner either a free bar tab or $50 for their troubles.

I agree, 49 is a good turnout these days. But that's the thing, tournament organizers are satisfied with 20-30 team turnouts (or 40-50 singles). Two years ago in Saint Louis, there was a series of qualifiers for a final WS satellite and most of the tourneys had 40-64 teams. The smallest one was 28 teams, I believe. One year later, exact same format, exact same promotion (partnered with a radio station) and it was impossible to crack 20 teams. Some tourneys had less than 5 teams.

I think it's hard to argue that things are going in the right direction when it comes to local tournaments. And it's not just Saint Louis - look at Socal, MD, Chicago... participation has dropped all across the board. I might be wrong, but I do think it has a lot to do with the extreme lean and ridiculous shooting percentages people are putting up. I agree that even with a 1.5ft extension bar, the best players today will still dominate, but the lean perception will be diminished and they WILL NOT be shooting the same percentages (some have argues that percentages will go right back to where they are now, I disagree with that).

  • i kinda feel like this thread has run it's course... not much new has been said for a week or so.  except for the guy who said the pong bar would not encourage any college students to play... of course that's just one perspective.

i'm in support of some organizers trying the bar, and reporting back on the impact.  however, we all know that it takes some time for changes to set in and really see if there is an impact.  so, if there is going to be a pong bar then people need to get crack'n on making it and implementing it.

if it is to be used for WS VII, then that should really be announced in January 2011, so that satellites start using them for the whole year.  ideally the announcement would come at WS VI.

So that means the pong bar needs to get moving if it's going to be tried out.  what's the status of that happening?

also, since the promoters who will try it are totally in favor of it, i'd like to hear some unbiased opinions once it's been used for a few months.  i'll volunteer to head to chicago and check out the scene, as someone who is "on the fence" about the bar.  but, i want just say it for the sake of saying it... if you're against the bar then the bpong community needs you to check this out to & try and provide an objective opinion of attendance (after a reasonable amount of time using it).

honestly though... the more rule/equipment changes i hear on this forum, the more i start to think just keep it the same.  let's not try to turn everything we know upside down in one year.

  • OK personally im against it because i am one of the people who doesnt think it is really going to help bring more people out BUT i do think having the world series covered by spike or espn 12 or someone WOULD bring a lot more people out especially if the shots didnt look as ridiculous to new people as they do now.

So i guess i have moved from being against it to being on the fence about it and as long as the bar is either ankle height or hip/thigh height i can see it possibly working (on the ground is bad cuz then you can obviously step on it and other team would have to stare at your feet To you).  Like it has been stated a million times already in this thread the top players in each state would need about a month or two and they would be right back out ahead of the average players again.  And im sure their percentages eventually would get up close to where they are now once they have played with the change for 3+ years.

I would like to get some tables once the change has been made for us in AZ to test out for a couple months and see what we think.  But like i said i like the idea for the fact that if (when) the world series ends up being covered on TV i wont feel stupid telling people ohh hey look im that guy reaching over half way over the table... Even though i doubt this will curb even half of the bitching and complaining about our rules that we constantly hear from outsiders but you never know maybe this sort of change is the answer to all of our problems.
