I'm about to start hosting weekly tournaments at the jersey shore and was wondering if there was any law on allowing people to play with what ever they want. I know most places enforce water only, but since it's just a weekly tournament, I'm thinking some people might want to play with beer in their cups.

Comes in very handy hosting tourny's. Short answer is just play it safe and use water. Its easier for new tourny directors and alot easier to manage. Plus the community tends to frown on drinking games, so water makes it a competition. Good luck with the tourny. p.s- I dont think NJ has a law about playin with beer, but do your own research and have it in writing. Cover your ass!!

I dont see any law or regulation prohibiting beer in cups. Games are allowed in bars (except Belmar). Funny that poker tournaments are barred from requiring entry fees and providing prizes, but darts and other "skill tournaments" such as beer pong are allowed to -assuming you think NJ players make cups because of skill and not luck haha You probably should call the ABC to make sure. CARD PLAYING/DART GAMES MAY A LICENSEE ALLOW CARD PLAYING OR DART GAMES TO BE PLAYED ON A LICENSED PREMISES? Card playing is permitted provided that no gambling takes place or there is no play for money, prizes or other things of value. Dart playing is permitted on the same basis, except that the Division of A.B.C. will grant permission for a dart tournament which can include an entry fee and the awarding of prizes other than alcoholic beverages. Other skill tournaments (bowling, golf, billiards, etc.) will be treated similarly. No prizes or anything of value may be awarded to anyone other than actual participants in such tournaments. By the way, I don't think they banned beer pong in bars in belmar, I think they banned outdoor beer pong, you can't play games involving drinking where you neighbors can see you....I THINK Last edited on Feb 5th 2010, 03:18 pm

You don't have to worry about losing cups. When playing with beer in the cups, be prepared to issue new cups for each game (it's not a frat house). The clean up is also a bit easier with water cups. Of course, this all depends on how big you anticipate the tournaments to be. I know WPT had a couple tournaments in New Brunswick and they used beer for both of their events. And the weekly tournaments at Pub46 and 3 East both also had beer in cups. Where on the shore are you going to be hosting tournaments?

Where on the shore are you going to be hosting tournaments? yea, I defiantly thought about the cup issue and how I would need more cups if I let players play with beer.....the only way I would let players use beer in cups is if 1) there's a huge demand for it and 2) it's legal Bar-A in Belmar offered me Wednesdays, and Marina Grille in brick/point pleasant is interested.

I know Id be pissed if I played in a tourny and walked out with a couple bucks and herpes...

There is no health issue if new cups are used for each game. Like I said already, it is allowed in New Jersey. Bars themselves, however, worry about the gambling aspect of things. I know I personally have talked to bar owners/managers and one of their main concerns was the side gambling aspect that the beer pong crowd generates.
