  • Pongers,
After taking everyone's suggestions, concerns, and questions into consideration, Mike and I have finalized all the details of the 2010 Beast of the East Tournament.

Buy-in: $50 per player ($500 per squad of 10 players)

Payout: $5000 for 1st (assuming at least 11 squads)
    $5000+ for 1st, TBD for 2nd (12-15 squads)
    $6500 for 1st, $1000 for 2nd (assuming 16 squads)

    Format:
Prelims: Each squad will be randomly split into 5 teams of 2. Teams will be split up into pools and play every team in their pool.  If there are 10 squads, there will be 10 pools of 5 teams so each team will be guaranteed 4 games.  If there are 12 squads, there will be 10 squads of 6 teams.  No one will play another team from their own squad.  Cup differentials will be tracked.

The top 8 squads will then move on to the main bracket.  Squads will be seeded into the bracket based on overall record for all teams on the squad.

Bracket play: Top 8 squads will play in a single elimination best of 3 tournament.  Seed 1 vs Seed 8, Seed 2 vs Seed 7, Seed 3 vs Seed 6, Seed 4 vs Seed 5... Team 1 on Squad 1 will play Team 1 on Squad 8 in a best of three series, winner of that series gets a win for their squad. The squad that gets at least 3 of the 5 series won moves on to the next round in the bracket.  It should be pretty self explanatory from here on out. There is no need for tie breakers since there is an odd number of match-ups between two squads facing each other.

    Sit n Gos:
As soon as the prelims are over, we will start sit n gos. You must be eliminated from the tournament in order to be eligible to play in sit n go matches. We will do $10, $20, $50, and $100 per squad sit n gos.

    Tournament Rules:
WSOBP rules, white WSOBP cups will be used, 3 star MDBP balls will be used, and black BPong tables will be used during the tournament.

    Squad Rules:
Domestic players of a squad are anyone who are within a 100 mile radius of the team captain's location or live in the state or region that the team represents.  Each team is allowed 1 transplant player under the strict condition that they have a strong tie to that region.  If the questionable individual does not have a strong enough tie to that region, they cannot play on that squad. Mike and I will make the call on how strong the connection is. Strong connections include: playing in that area often, playing on that squads BotE team in the past, or living in that area until fairly recently.

    How to submit a squad:
Team captains need to email Mike V with your list of 10 players, their email addresses, and their home addresses.  Once a squad has been approved, the captain and each player on the squad will be notified that they are eligible to register online and pay their entry fee. Once a team is fully paid up and registered, they are locked in.  The deadline to submit a squad for approval is next Friday, January 29th.

Unfortunately it is not possible to make everyone happy but hopefully we have been able to make the majority of you content. If you have any problems or concerns, please email Mike and I and we will get back to you asap.

Get ready for the biggest and best BotE to date!

  • Mike will post a list of all the squads we have submitted so far tomorrow. We have 6 squads submitted, 4 of which did not play last year. The LI and MD squads havent even been submitted yet so we should be close to 10 already. Keep spreading the word throughout the community and get more squads rounded up. The more the better!

  • Sorry. Forgot to mention that teams will be randomized. First for the prelims teams will be randomized and you play with the same partner for all the prelim games. Then for each round of the bracket, the teams are re-randomized.

  • Great work and well explained the one issue that I do not like is players that were on last years roster should have ZERO play on being allowed to play this year.
We all know LI and NJ had several players ( chichester for LI )  IWC NJ that should not of been permitted.
I also think if the midwest is going to play they need to have strict roster requiremnents too.
Having players from ILL, Mizz and Ohio is a stretch.  They should not be able to pick the 10 best players from 3 maybe 4 states and show up.

That is not what we are saying. What happened last year is not going to happen again since each team is only allowed 1 transplant...being from an area and playing on that squad last year would just be things we would consider but is not guaranteed. The parties at question have to make a strong case to us on why they should be allowed to be transplanted.

As for the midwest team, what do you suggest they do because there are not many people in that region willing to make the trip...It is not like they are forming a "michigan" team and then taking teams from 4 different states. There is not much organized pong in that region. What do you suggest we do so they arent left out?

  • I am putting togather one of the midwest teams.  I'm from Michigan and live by myself in the middle of nowhere so i'm not even 100 miles form any wsobp competitor.  There are only a few guys that run sattalite's out here.  DrunkenBear is where I always play.  This is where I'm grabbing players from for my team.  These are guys that I compete against all year.  It's not like I'm saying "hey Peter Rusch come play on my team ur from Wisconsin".  I wll even give u Zen's email (who run's drunkenbear) so he can confirm that the guys on my team go to at least 3-6 tournaments that he hosts a year minus 1 player which was said w/in the rules to be fair.  He is clearly midwest and usually plays in ohio not chicago.
