i guarantee that Pop, Ron, Vince, Dane, and anybody else who has the time to practice and the motivation to succeed will become dominant players on the bigger tables.  then you will have made the game harder for the spanks, no different for the beasts of the game, and probably harder for middle of the road guys like me... and still no one is any happier than before.

I also guarantee that you won't lose to these guys anymore often than you do now. They just won't be shooting at demoralizing percentages.

Making tournaments more fun is a good topic of conversation, but the point about 'demoralizing percentages' is legit.  Serious players will still practice, and therefore will most likely still be tough to beat.  With that being said - the perception that there is a chance to beat those teams will more likely be there if they are shooting 55% rather than 80%.  It doesn't matter if that means other teams are shooting 35% instead of 45%.  They will not be getting run off the table by perfect, or near-perfect games.

  • So at my next tournament  (Saturday)

I am going to have Drunken Bear Girls, Pong Toss, and a Consolidation bracket for 0-2 teams, along with a raffel for a bar tab.

I am still trying to figure out if i will have time for a small singles tourney after and some sit n go's

I will see where this gets me and let everyone know.

I would be happy with a bar to extend the table or keeping both feet on the ground.

just like Piotr's points, i don't disagree with you that 'demoralizing percentages' discourage people from playing.  i just don't think lengthing the tables will cure that.  i actually believe that those elite players will just practice enough and have enough natural ability (as stupid as that sounds) to keep their percetages pretty close, if not the same, to as they are now.  i find it hard to believe that making the table 1-2 ft longer will stop them.

i like some of your numbers up above, but not they way you broke it down.  so for example purposes i'll accept your argument that a longer table will decrease better players' percentages:

let's say ron & pop shoot 70% on average, and steve and i shoot 45%.  then say a longer table reduces your percentage by 20%.  so then it's 50 vs. 25???  i'm feeling like i got run off the table if i shoot 25% and the other team shoots 50%...  at least at 45% i feel like i had a decent game and just lost to people who are better.

i think the equipment and rules debate is a huge circle...

for every argument there will be a counter.  for every person that feels the rule/equipment change made something right, there will be someone who thinks its wrong...

i managed a motorcycle dealership for a little while.  everyone who came in wanted to argue about price, and "out the door" cost.  if we tried to sell every item based on price then we wouldn't have sold anything... or never made money on anything.  instead we had to sell them on things like better customer service, we offered maintence packages that others didn't, gave them deals on clothes or equipment, or anything else that had value to them.  this is along the same lines as pong... you're never going to win on the rules and equipment arguments, too many people expect different things.  that's why you get creative and come up with other reasons for people to come to tournaments --- because it's a fun event, the place to be

I would be happy with a bar to extend the table or keeping both feet on the ground.

Let us know how that goes. As for rules and changing the perception for new players, as much as we hate the house party rules, are there any house party rules that we can add into our rules that can make the game more fun, add a chance factor, etc... Fingering/blowing, bounce counts as 2 cups, etc. Rules that wouldn't really effect how we play but add an extra element or fun factor to the game. Guaranteed that as people start to get drunk and try fingering a ball out of a cup, they have a better chance of accidentally knocking the cup over. I am not saying that we should institute any of these rules but I am bringing it up for discussion. Newcomers may be able to ignore our lack of elbow rule if most of the other house party rules they are used to existed?

As for the foot bar, do you really think that will keep people from leaning as much? It is not cutting them off at their waist...They can still lean and for the tall guys, starting their lean from an extra foot back wont change their reach by that much. But I could be wrong. I would like to see someone come up with a prototype and get someone to lean with and without it and see how much of a change there really is...

Neil - how much do you guys normally pay your divas per tournament to come out mingle, etc? Because I know a lot of the liquor promo girls near us get paid $25+ an hour and if we had to pay promo girls that much for a 5 hour tournament and get 3-5 of them to come out, we would be losing a ton of money especially since our tournaments aren't filling up as it is.

And for those of you who have never organized and ran your own tournaments, we depend on the newbies to help cover the cost of the prizes so we don't want to scare them away and do have to cater to them because without them, the 12 serious teams that actually have any shot of winning aren't going to come anywhere close to covering the cost of the prizes, advertising, etc. There are some times that care less about winning and just want to come out for a good time. And if you show them that good time, they will keep coming out. Make it worth their while...Drink specials, beer included, divas, giveaways from beer companies, etc.

If any of you find anything that starts working, let the rest of us know.

totally agree. What are some ideas people have though on this?

    So far we have:
    -divas
    -bar tab giveaways
    -tournament beer included
    -beer company promo item giveaways
-tournament beer included or beer included until the kegs are kicked

    what else?

and what advertising schemes have people tried?

    -Facebook helps raise awareness.
-Flyers posted in the bars help bring a few teams out but aren't that effective
-Going around on a busy night in the bar you are hosting the event at and talking to people and handing out little promo cards helps some but still doesn't get many teams to come out
-I have found that the best method is word of mouth. Getting your regulars to tell their friends about it and bring their friends out to play.

I will see where this gets me and let everyone know.

unfortunately i don't think you'll "see where this gets" you until you have your next tourney after this one... which if that's not until next year, you may as well consider yourself starting over again.

i don't remember if you do it or not, but i'd collect email addresses so that you can do very targeted marketing for the next tourney(s).  that way the people who had fun get a personal reminder that they have something to go out to.  otherwise some of those people may not be drooling over facebook and bpong like the rest of us, waiting for the announcement of your next tourney.

    drink specials
side challenges (like last cup challenge)
    sit n' goes
    flip cup side tourney
    bags side tourney
    PPV fight
    tailgate event at a college
themed tournaments?  (70's beerpong) everyone dressed up gets 20% off?

like i said before, i'm def not the most creative around... but i know ideas are out there for the taking

  • SIT N GO'S!!!!!!

IF U HAVE SIT N GO'S ALL NIGHT ON THE SIDE THEN THE LESSER TEAMS CAN STILL WIN MONEY AND WINNING IS HAVING FUN.

I know when I first started going out to tournaments I would wait for teams to lose and play cash games w/ them until the tournament was over.  Made a 2 hr car ride worth it when u R meeting new people and playing competitive games even though u lost the tournament.  Just open up sit n goes for the losing teams and maybe set up a different bracket for the new players to play in and if the BIG NAME teams want to play then make them play each other.  That way the top teams can still compete for side cash by playing each other and the middle of the road teams don't get blown away by top talent.  This would B fair!  Divas will always help too!

I said this in another post but I still dont know of any girl teams or guy girl teams that have won a non co-ed tourney.  \

Ah contraire.  My friend and I defeated 83 teams to win the prestigious Pitt Law School Fall Semester Pong Tournament but a few weeks ago.  Prize was a whopping 50$... EACH.

This is why I like the idea that past winners can only play again if they bring a brand new partner.  You get new blood, and they're going to get hooked since they'll undoubtedly have some success playing with a good player.  Brilliant idea whoever thought of that.

I'm with Piotr on the equipment changes.  Yes, people will bitch no matter what, yes the best teams will win no matter what... but a vertical bar extension would cut down on the perception of unfair leaning which like it or not is hurting the popularity of tournament pong.

To the guy who likened beer pong to the NBA - keep dreaming.  Beer pong will never be more than a gambling sport.   That's not to say it can't blow up - look at poker - but would anyone watch poker if it weren't played for gigantic sums?

And where do the gigantic sums come from- you have to cater to these people.
