  • I played in a tourney once that called it the 'sniper rule'.  No one shot at the same time, and you could pull cups once they were hit.  Two in one cup meant three cups pulled.  Combine a slow cup pull and a quick second shot at the same cup - and things got a ittle interesting.  I'm not endorsing it by any means - but a little more understandable (to get some defensive cup pulling involved) than the death cup, which is ridiculous.

What if you grabbed the cup and it hit your hand because your hand was in the way?  If that didn't mean anything, then you could just pull the cup with one hand and stick your other hand in front of the cup, or just swat the ball when it's coming towards you.  If it was on ACCIDENT, and nothing is enforced that is...  If there IS a penalty, then the other team could just throw the ball at your hand, hit it, and then take their penalty cup(s) and it's STILL a stupid rule (in my opinion of course)

    Thank you billy

Every one assumed that I was meaning "Game Over", which I agree is super stupid. But I wasn't meaning that, I was curious if it counted as one cup or two, and if you would get a roll back?

well, we probably assumed that you meant game over, because that's what most people do when they play that rule. you probably assumed to get a better reaction from the forum. i would assume it would be best to practice with your partner taking one shot at a time, because i'm assuming if you pull that shit at the WSOBP people are going to clown you.

I don't think I would clown him...  I DEFINITELY would just laugh my ass off, because effectively, he would be taking his turn down from 2 shots to 1 shot for absolutely no gain, lol...

Like I said - I don't defend the use of this rule.  Too many opportunities for disputes, and too easy to shoot at the same time and double up. I don't know about intentionally swatting at such shots - the only time I saw someone try to do it was against me.  P1 shot/made a cup, as I'm reaching for the cup, P2 rapid fire shoots.  I think the ball hit the rim as I pulled the cup away (made me spill half the cup by trying that).  But basically the way it was played, you get no rules protection if you're trying to double up a cup.

  • we use a version of this rule, and have used it successfully in 2 tournaments.  The way we do it is that you don't remove the cup when its made at all until both shots are taken, if you make it in the same cup, it counts as three (defending team picks the other two), and the balls roll back.  I like this rule for a few reasons.

    1) its not getting a bonus for being lucky (most of the time) because you have to hit one particular cup

    2) it is a tough shot to make, because it is very common that the sunk ball bounces off the ball already in the cup.  Which can be an advantage for the defense if the second shooter does shoot for the cup.

    3) It gives hope to the team down 6 cups to 1

    4) if you don't remove the cup after the first shot, there is no controversy about hands in the way, and when new people play like this, they are quickly reminded to put the cup back.

this is the exact same rule we play among my group of friends, although i seriously considered requiring people to remove the ball in the cup after the first shot is made after i lost a game due to my shot (the second to go in that cup) bouncing of the 1st ball and out lol.

and just to clearify why its worth 3 cups instead of 2 is becuase its a little harder to both hit the same cup as opposed to hitting 2 different cups so we thought it should be worth one more.  and another small rule we have to go along with that is when the team who shot chooses which cups the other team removes they have to be touching the cup that was hit.
