    Post subject: Throw During Re-rack

  • So here's the deal. We got a re-rack into a 3-2-1 pyramid, and while the other guy was adjusting the cups, I shot and made the cup. He drank it, but would not stop bitching about how i cheated and that since his hands were not off the cups and his head was still down, that its a "gentlemen's" rule and that I was in the wrong. I never wanted to be one of those guys that took it that seriously (and i even admit that it might have been a bit un-gentlemenly) but he was bitching about it SO much that i got mad. He kept arguing his case, but i was just trying to point out that he was bitching about it too much. Am i in the wrong here? is there even a rule against this? am I a cheater as he labeled me? help me out here.

  • Edit: when i say adjusting the cups, the re-rack was already in place, he was just straightening out the back row.

  • so the rack was already in place?

in that case, unless you asked for an adjustment he shouldn't be grabbing the cups to begin with. and you should be free to shoot at will..

  • Shooting and more importantly making a shot while an opponent(s) still "re-racking" is the ultimate slap in the face when it happens and that's why I love this tactic so much! It's the best way to make you’re opponent feel like a huge dick.

It gives you're opponent absolutely no time to react to the flight of the shot and if they are re-racking you probably just made a shot on your previous turn so they are already pissy about the fact that they had to re-rack in the first place.

Side Note: When we play just for fun (to get drunk - non tourney) we allow this tactic. As soon as one team has both balls it is then considered their turn to shoot and they can take their shots when they want. However if a ball is shot while someone is re-racking and misses or bounces off the person doing the re-racking and out of play then the shot is a missed shot. On the flip-side if a balls goes in either on its own or bounces off the person re-racking it counts. Basically keep your effin' head up and protect the cups.

I wonder if that dude would have been bitching so much if you had missed that shot? Would he have even complained? Doubt it!

  • It'd be one thing if you bounced it in and were playing a bounce is two cups, when he was doing that, or if it went off him like a backboard. But if you just shot while he was fixing it, it's not like him having his head up or down would've mattered. What does he think, that he can intimidate the ball away from the cup as it's thrown?

  • I think that if you make the cup with a straight shot, without it touching anything, then you would have made the shot regardless.

If its a bounce, I wouldn't allow it, and if the ball hit him while he was still adjusting the cups, I wouldn't allow it either. I don't consider the rack to be done until the person racking them steps back, but like I said, if the shot went straight in, its a moot point.

  • we play that as soon as both balls are shot, it is the other teams shot. if you are re-racking, all is game. bounce or not. I usually bounce while people re-rack, unless I am playing 1v1 against my usual partner, bc he knows it's coming. if you don't like, it, who cares? it's a damn drinking game.

  • i read through most of these replies pretty quickly - but generally speaking, you're dumb.

wait until someone is done re-racking.  i've had "little kids" at the table throwing while i'm finishing the re-rack, and i'm sure that they're hoping i accidently hit the ball or something, even though i don't know it has been thrown, and they get a free shot or cup out of it.  pretty lame.  if you can only win by cheap moves why are you paying &  entering tournaments? - in the end you're not gonna win - someone with real skill will beat you.

but unlike you opponent who bitched about it, i get pissed, then focused, then win.  i now put my side drink in front of the rack when i'm re-racking, and leave the front cups as the last to be racked just to prevent losers from trying to jump the throw.

no, in that case i would be the dumb fuck.

what we're talking about is an action that takes place in order for the game to continue - kind of necessary, & isn't meant to be part of the "game" - uless you specifically make rules about it.  I guess i just assume everyone that posts something like this is playing by wsobp rules, unless otherwise noted.

and i don't bitch about anything at the tables - if i can't straight up beat someone, i congratulate them on a good win & that's the end of it.

i think someone also questioned if there is a rule about this topic - at least for wsobp rules it says:

"a) Players are not allowed to shoot until the opposing team has clearly finished reforming. In the event that the thrower shoots before this:
    (1) A cup made does not count and the opposing team receives possession of the ball.
    (2) A missed shot is counted as a miss and the opposing team receives possession of the ball."
