  • So i was watching the championship game and they played two games....one in which get your popcorn ready won....and one in which smashing time won....what confuses me is each team won one game a piece....shouldn't there have been a tie breaker? Or maybe i'm just on cloud 9 and smashing time won both but i could've sworn they each won one game a piece.

That was still part of the double elimination bracket..since going into the game get your popcorn ready already had one loss which if they lost one more they were out of the tournament. As for smashing time going into the game had not lost one game..therefore they needed to lose twice to be eliminated.

  • in think that that no matter what, the two teams that make it to the finals should have there record wiped clean and compete in a best 2 out of 3.

i understand how it is currently, and there is nothing wrong with it.....but i think it would just be better if the two teams at the end played a best 2 out of 3......i mean in football for example the top teams have an advantage in the playoffs, like 1st round bye and home field advantage, but once they get to the superbowl, past record dosnt matter.....they play on neutral terrritory with neither team getting advantage.....a 6th seed team is equal to a 1st seed team in the superbowl.

    just a thought......

It's a double elim tournament.  Smashing Time went through til the finals with no losses.  GPR went through to the finals with one loss.  In a double elim tournament, the team from the loser's bracket ALWAYS has to win twice in a row.

In this specific case, it actually worked out that Smashing Time and Getcha Popcorn Ready DID play a best 2/3 series.  They met in the winner's bracket, and Smashing Time won.  GPR had to beat Not Even Close to make it back to the Finals against Smashing Time, where they won one, and lost one.

Putting both teams on an even slate for the finals would be completely unfair to the team from the winners bracket.

unfair? i disagree.....you have a 2 day prelim to determine who makes it to day 3, you have a single elim round to determine who continues from there, i see no reason why the double elimination tournament can not be used to weed the teams down to two.

the idea of the top two teams meeting in the championship, records cleared, for a best 2 out of 3 match up, to me (my opinion), just sounds like it would make the championship that much more exciting.....in the championship, get your popcorn won the first game, smashing time won the second, i def would of like to seen a third game......

i def think that the double elimination tournament is completly fair, the better team won, and all that....i'm just looking at how you could make the championship more exciting......i mean if smashing time hit their 10 for 12 and won it on their first game, i def would walked away wanting more. alot of people are on here talking about getting beer pong more exposure and all that, i think in order to do that we have to make watching it as fun as playing it.

there is another thread where skinny brings up, maybe, changing the format of day 3 to a best 2 out of 3 format....i def think that a 2 out of 3 format would make the final day of the WSOBP more interesting

Yes, I have proposed making day 3 a single-elim, best 2 out of 3 format. That option is still on the table. However, if we do not go that route, and continue to keep a double-elim format, then I am fairly certain that most people would agree that yes, it would be unfair for 'the slate to be wiped clean' for the final match. That would take away the real advantage of winning your way  through the winners bracket, which doesn't really make sense. This years tournament, where Getcha Popcorn Ready played Smashing Time three times, is a perfect example of that.

If you are arguing for a change away from the double-elim format, then that's fine, but you can't have a double-elim bracket where the final round has both teams go in even.

Also, I should point out that while I may be a proponent of doing a single-elim 2 out of 3 for the final day, I don't know that I would agree that it would be more 'interesting' per se. I think that double-elim brackets do make things interesting, but I'm starting to think that the 2 out of 3 makes a lot of sense for Beer Pong, especially when a cold team is playing a team that's been playing.

  • I think the college baseball world series wipes the slate clean for the final after a double elimination tournament. So there's always a best 2/3 for the final. So the concept isn't unheard of

I don't really follow College Baseball, so I'm not completely sure of this, but after reading the Wikipedia for all of about 5 seconds, my understanding is that there's two double-elimination brackets, and that the winners of the brackets play in a final 2/3 series. I've never heard of this type of format, but it is quite reasonable, and has got me thinking....

As an aside, if there's anything I've learned from the BCS championships it's this: Fairness and College sports have nothing to do with each other. Hmmm....I guess I'm just thinking about the fact that THE STEELERS ARE GOING BACK TO THE FUCKING SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!

Skinny, I mentioned this on another thread but I'm not sure if you saw but I think it would be a good idea if you guys had a Frequently asked questions section because of all the new people who will coming on here after the amount of coverage that WSOP IV had. That way we don't have a full year of leaning posts and people wondering how much they have to pay if they don't stay at the hotel
