I see every ones point on this matter. But it would be too hard to make SOS. We dont have stats that we can use through out the year..we just have this one tournament to go off of. And some ppl it may be there first tournament and nobody really knows how good or bad those teams are. The one thing i didnt like was those fringle teams...they were there for show (some of them) and were obviously a automatic loss and they gave a huge boost for your cup diff...so if we can limit those teams some how. But we also played a team who was one and nine at the time we played them and we were eight and two..and they played us has if it was the first game of the tournament. even though they had no shot of making it..so not every team just rolls over when they are out of the running. The only fair way to do it for every team..is to keep it random.

You don't need stats throughout the year.  All you need is the records of the a team's schedule on Days 1 & 2.  For example, if my team went 9-3 and our 12 opponents went a combined 100-44 (12 teams * 12 games each = 144 total games), and your team went 9-3 and your 12 opponents went a combined 44-100, then I played a much tougher schedule and my team is most likely better than yours.  The fairest thing to do would be something like calculating a "power rating" based on 50% winning percentage, 30% schedule strength (i.e. combined opponents' winning percentage) and 20% cup differential.  We actually calculate something like this (but more complicated) for the 50-100 team Stanford league every season, and it factors in pretty heavily when we determine who makes the final 32-team bracket and where they are seeded.

This wouldn't be hard to do at all.  Hell, I could (and would) write a program that calculates and updates a "power rating" using any formula you want instantly as soon as you enter game results.

The main drawback as I see it is that the system isn't very transparent and "bubble teams" that don't make it would feel like they got screwed.  But is the current winning % + cup differential system any less arbitrary really?

I don't think we should eliminate bad teams, especially hot girl teams.  I mean come on, this thing is already 95% dudes.

Strength of Schedule will be almost impossible to determine really.  Those who have been associated with WSOBP and beer pong in general for the last few years know who the good teams and players (more important) are.  But could you imagine if randomly the top 12 placers at this years WSOBP were to be each other's opponents in next years first two days of competition?  Let's say that Ron and Pops finish out those two days with a 6-6 record (not out of the question considering the competition), you would argue their strength of schedule should allow them to still advance....but on the strength of beating a 3-9 Schools in Session and a 1-11 Getcha Popcorn Ready?  See what I'm saying?

That's a good point, but a randomized draw makes this kind of outcome highly unlikely (like 1 in a trillion).  Schedule strength wouldn't be a 100% fair system, but it would be a substantial improvement over the way things currently are.  At least it does SOMETHING to account for the level of teams you play.

Besides, I highly doubt Getcha Popcorn Ready would go 1-11 even if you lined up the 12 best teams as their opponents.

I agree with ya on Getcha Popcorn Ready, I was just using it as an example.  But now that I see your previous post, I feel as if I've made a mistake.  I was under the impression that the first two days are twelve teams playing each other, round robin style, (I haven't been to the the WS yet), but you make it sound as if the matchups the first two days are completely random...is that the case?

Ok i see what your saying. And actually its not that bad of an idea. one question though. Say my team went 12-0 and the teams we faced went 54-90 and your team went 10-2 and the teams you faced went 100-44..how much of a diff would that make in the standings??

What Dam wrote is exactly what I meant by SOS.

As for your question, it would depend what algorithm was decided on. I initially suggested that every win should be worth 1 point and the team with the toughest SOS should get 2 additional points while the team with the weakest SOS would get 0 additional points (additional points would decrease linearly in between).

In your example the 12-0 team would almost certainly be ahead of the 10-2 team unless the 12-0 team had the absolute weakest SOS and the 10-2 team had the absolute toughest SOS (which is very unlikely) in which case they would still only be tied at 12 total point each.

As for cup differential you could also factor that in, but I would only award 1 additional point for it.

Writing a program that would continuously update standings based on these assumptions would be a piece of cake.

  • any scenario somebody throws out there, someone is going to find a flaw in it.....there are pros and cons to any and every way of doing the tournament and no matter what i doubt we will find a 100% perfect way.

there was the argument that it would be unfair for a 8-4 team with a high cup differential to make it to day 3 and a 8-4 team with a low cup differential but higher strength of schedule not to make it.........so say you have team A who has the high C.D. and team B has the high S.O.S., now it might not be fair that team A gets to move on because they had a easier schedule, but at the same time the schedule is random and its not team A's fault that they got lucky and drew easier teams then team B.....

bottom line, no matter what, the system is not gonna be perfect.

sure, it's not team A's fault they drew the easier schedule, but if they actually were a better team than team B, they should have ended up with a better record than team B given they had a much easier schedule.
