  • I'm sure it's something bpong has discussed, but as one person who has done satellites and been to others - there are not guidelines to how to host the tournament, as some people cannot draw enough teams to make it financially viable without either allowing buy backs, or creating a series of events for one prize.

How were they done yesterday?  Did they play a round of the winners bracket, and then a round of the losers bracket, and then allow teams to buy back?  Did they do that after each round?  At what point did the buy backs end?

  • As Peter has stated, we do not place controls over the structure of satellite tournaments. The only things we require are that the satellites use official WSOBP rules and equipment, as to allow people to play in WSOBP conditions.

As far as the buy-ins go, I've been to a lot of tournaments that have them, and I don't see any problem with them as long as they are done in an equitable manner, i.e., you pay the same amount as the initial buy-in, and you're put back to the same starting point as when you first started (i.e. you start over).

  • To be honest, the idea of buy-backs, or multiple buy-ins is not necessarily dumb.  The main thing is that it allows teams to get more out of the time they spent traveling to get to a tournament.  For a team that wants to play, but has to drive 3-5 hours to get there, it makes the experience more worthwhile if they can enter more than once.  It's like the guy who asked if the World Series was just one big tournament, where you could spend a couple g's to show up, then lose 1 game and be out [which obviously isn't the case with 2 full days of guaranteed pool play].  Giving teams the chance to buy-back helps alleviate the pain of losing two straight.  It really does matter on how it is implemented and how it affects the way the tournament is run.

The problem is that traditional double elimination brackets are complicated enough in their implementation, which is why I ask how the buy-backs were done.  A traditional double-elim bracket does not have room for buy-backs, unless the bracket isn't full, and teams are dropped into remaining slots at the bottom.  The process of getting teams to lose two games to fill those slots would mean that you are playing multiple rounds of the tournament, then starting over for the teams that bought back.  If buy-backs went pretty late, I'd imagine that teams weren't starting over from scratch making their way through the whole bracket.  Does anyone have a picture of the bracket, or know better how the buy backs were implemented?

  • ya i wish i could explain it better but i was getting confused with it. im used to normal double elin brackets but ive never dealt with buybacks on a double elim before, all i know is they had like 4 different sheets they were flipping through to mark down wins and losses so brackets were scattered around but we did have like 105 teams to begin with so thats probably why there were so many brackets...
