    Post subject: First day overtime??

  • Throughout the back and forth on the 'shoot til you miss' thread there have been small comments about allowing overtime on the first two days.

I'm not sure if this has been ruled out because of time constraints but it seems to be something that most people would like. It seems a little harsh to lose by one or two cups and have no chance at rebuttal. This is the only rule that doesn't seem to give the best team the best chance for winning. Arguments can be made both ways and I understand that it puts more pressure on you to perform well but I would like to see a chance for rebuttal on the first day.

Wanted to put this individual topic out there without including the entire overtime debate.

  • The only reason prelims are sudden death is because of time.

If we can figure out a way to make OT manageable, we will, and it's something I would definitely like to consider.  I don't think we'll make a decision until we have a better idea of some of the other logistics (e.g., how many teams we have - or at least a general idea).

  • I'd love to see that, or at the very LEAST one turn of regulation after the other team has hit the last cup(s).

  • Let me just ask this to the general public (and I'm fairly sure I know what the consensus is going to be)....How would you guys feel about the following scenario:

We institute unlimited OT's in Prelims, following the same rebuttal rules as overtime. However, as soon as your game goes into overtime, the game would have to move to a different table. We would have a special bank of tables dedicated to OT games, which would be in a prime viewing spot for spectators. You then play your game to completion at that table.

  • If this is managable then absolutely. I understand that these guys do whatever they can to make the tournament the best it can be and I think this would be a good addition to the rules. Rebuttal is a big part of beer pong and it should be a part of the first two days. Hopefully it's something that can be pulled off without causing too many problems.

I don't think anyone could complain about this setup.  I don't know about unnecessarily moving games though.
I know the goal has always been to have games start 20 minutes after one another. It might not be necessary to move an OT game between two good teams, which could easily go into OT after 5 minutes, with their game still ending before other regulation games.

There could be a time limit set - where once games go to OT after a set time, they are moved to another table.  Just a thought.

We figured we'd make the process as complicated as possible.  What Skinny neglected to mention was the obstacle course from the main playing area to the designated OT area.

I know what you're saying, and we may very well structure things where only certain OT games must be moved to the designated area.  At the same time, it would be much easier to simply say, "All OT games move to this other area."  It would allow the staff to begin to immediately clear off the tables, and people won't have to keep track of "Am I after the 15-mintue window at which point I have to move or not?"

Regardless of the logistics, we are definitely trying to figure out a way to incorporate OT into all games, including prelims.  We've always wanted to do it, but we just have not had the time to figure out a way to reasonably manage it.  (Not like it's that hard - there's just only so much we can think about at once.)

  • I personally would have zero issues with the OT games being moved to a designated area. I'm sure you'll get some people crying about it, but you can't make everyone happy. I think that's a great solution.
