Post subject: New Rules/ Update Debates

  • First, let me introduce myself. I've been a troll on this site for some time now. I've never had the time/energy to actually post on here, but I've played beer pong for about 4 years now. My partner and I won our way int WSOBPII and now again we'll be attending WSOBPIV.

One thing that seems a little odd is that people are trying to defend some rules as the golden standard, and "that's how it's always been, why change it now". Well, I live in Reno, Nv. and there are at least 10 different sets of rules that you can find during any weekend home game/ bar event. And I'm sure the total number of rules/variants are quite large amongst the whole country.

I really admire the way Billy and Duncan have handled the way they set up their rules, e.g. Creating as little controversy as possibly, dealing with time constraints, and overall fairness and enjoyability of the game we all love.

So, when someone comes up with an idea that they think should be looked at/changed, I think at first we all should really consider the feasibility of said rule, and if it should be looked at. It looks like the rules that are most in question are overtime and leaning.

Overtime, I myself love the shoot till you miss version of rebuttals, because I am a firm believer that one team shouldn't lose unless they miss a cup. During a close 1 to 1 match, it's such a shame for the game to end once the last cup is hit. Or if it's a 7 to 1 blowout, the losing team should have a chance at tying the mark. I like the alternating shots between teammates to make it more a "team" game. But it's also about individual performance as well. We can create a lot of drama and memorable events from a last ditch effort to keep ones tournament life alive.

Leaning, now if you've every watched the video's on bpong.com or youtube.com then I'm sure you've seen the flames, (UGH, Want some shot with that lean!!, Lean a little more!!, etc.) Now, I have a slight lean, but that's to get a better angle on the cups, not to decrease the distance between cups. And although there are extreme cases where someone leans 1/3 of the table, I think the real problem with enforcing the rules are the teams who barely go over the line. If it were to be against the rules, the whole tournament would come to a halt with objections to certain people leaning. And referees would be overwhelmed.

I realize this post is a little long, but I just wanted to introduce myself and try to stir up some conversation on what you guys would like to see changed. Thanks for your time.

  • I agree with what danwise is saying completely (although I play rebuttals a little different- not necessarily shoot til you miss but- hit a cup - thats it and keep the game rolling as it was being played...it makes the game extremely long but I enjoy it, because sometimes its such a close and well played game...that you can truly appreciate it going on that extra bit of time...but thats definetly not going to be a favorite among anyone here...I already feel the flak hah)
I myself have no lean whatsoever...and I make a point to have at least 6" between my elbow and the table itself- I have 2 partners on varying spectrums of play- one who could care less and follows the WSOBP rules to a T- including purposefully leaning...more then likely to get that angle on the cups but he never did it til we allowed leaning at my house- another leans back while he shoots (even tho it helps in no way) and always has a decent amount of distance from a lean...
I think Billy def has a point...you can't stop leaning...not in such a large venue- but excessive leaning is more so the issue then anything else- but even that can't be helped...while I play as a gentleman...not everyone can be expected to do so Not precisely

Danwise: Your input is appreciated and always welcome. I do have to disagree however with your description above, because I don't think that most people approach the rules in a "that's how it's always been, why change it now" manner.

Obviously, most rules have been debated on here at length. The rules used at the World Series of Beer Pong are the product of the general consensus of the Beer Pong community as well as the opinions of the staff as to what is most feasible in Tournament play. I don't think there are many legitimate people on here that are ever unwilling to consider changes; most of the time, the changes that are suggested have already been debated, and the conclusions that were previously reached are still valid.

With regards to the Shoot-till-you-miss debate, I really think this one comes down to personal preference. Obviously, when you are in the situation where you need to come back for a win, you want the opportunity to be the hero. My view as a spectator (I am always a spectator at the WSOBP unfortunately) is, I really want to a team redeem itself, rather than seeing one individual redeem a team. I must reiterate, however, that this comes down to personal preference, and my opinion is neither right nor wrong. I have not, however, seen any compelling argument as to why that rule would be *better* than the current rule.

Of course, that is why we have these forums....
