  • Possible an old debate, but since we have the new rule change to OT I thought it might be worth while.  So I guess the obvious question is.... why don't we start the regulation games with 2 shots like we do in OT?  What does everyone think.... 1 ball or 2 balls at the beginning of the game (no pun intended)??

  • lol!  I would like the 2 ball start, but thats just me.  Besides the 1 ball thing makes no sense to me.

  • It lets one team have a chance to put a little dent in the rack before the other team has a chance to hit three.

I think the reasoning behind it is that by giving one team both balls - you're giving a pretty big advantage to one team.  In the event of an equally played game (perfect or not), the team that starts would get an extra turn.

The justification for starting OT with 2 balls is that one team earned/deserves that advantage.  They potentially have a full extra turn, in the case where they need to hit for redemption.  When that happens though, the advantage swings to the other team.

I like it, think it makes sense, and is fair.

  • Looks like hitting that last cup first is gonna be even more important this year. Starting overtime with boths balls is a big advantage. Gonna be a lot of delicious Tri-Tip!

    I agree.

I don't understand why people don't understand this.

Who shoots first is based on an arbitrary event like a coin flip.
So why should an arbitrary event give one team a full extra turn?
Wouldn't it be more fair for one team to get 1 ball before the other team gets 2 or 3.

I've never once heard a logical argument against the 1-ball start.
    Does someone have one?

I can't think of one at all.

if these two answers aren't good enough for people... then go back and find all the old forum discussions on rules.  a lot of us on here have spent days/weeks over the past few years debating all these rules and came to logical concensuses.  that's why nobody is taking the time to discuss them again.

  • The only way for the game to be fair, I think that if one team started with two balls, that team would not be given a redemption opportunity if the other team hit the last cup first.  It would be like baseball, with respect to the rotating turns.  In the 9th inning (or extra innings) of a game, the visiting team can score, and the home team always has a chance to match.  The home team gets the chance to sink a walk-off cup, because the two teams would have had an equal number of turns, and the visiting team blew their chance to hit cups in their turns.

I don't think anyone would like that arrangement, so I'm not sure why I wasted time writing that out.  But is the only way I could see one team shooting two to start the game being fair.

One team shooting two to start OT is an advantage for one team, but they earned that advantage.
No one should have an advantage at the beginning of the game.
