  • This morning when I got back to the Flamingo in the wee hours of the morning the local news station had a preview for a story featuring the WSOBP.  Thats expected since it is Vegas and thats where the tourny is obviously.
I got home to Kansas City tonight and was surprised to see a quick story on the WSOBP IV on one of our local stations to close out the show.
I think this is incredible that the tournament is getting this kind of exposure!
Anyone else see stories in their home towns away from Vegas?

  • Yeah the Ann Arbor News wrote a couple articles already about it.  As lester said he and Troy were in the first one, then they got some quotes from Me and Troy and wrote another one today.

Pretty cool to finally see some recognition for the sport.  Check it out:

    which team had the "misrepresentation"

The team name was "2 Kids from Hampstead" a Maryland team.

Although my opinion means nothing, I sincerely don't believe that either of them deliberately mislead anyone. They lost by 8 cups on the featured table to Not Even Close (it wasn't) and were even interviewed after the loss. What happened in between then and when their name was called, I have no idea. All I know is that we were all shocked to hear their name get called again. In Maryland, they play out the top 7 matches, so we assumed it was for like 5th or 7th place of something like that.

They were both shocked to hear their names called, as were we. But the reason that there were no red flags for anyone I guess is because we always play out the top 7 matches in MD tournies, even if you have 2 losses.

That being said, both were extremely upset by how everything unfolded and I feel bad for them. It's also a shame that the particular article made no attempt to present the other side. I went to college for journalism and at least know that much.

I can't imagine anyone lying when they lose by 8 cups, in front of everyone, and are interviewed afterward, and then are shocked and barely sober enough to stand when called up for another game. And the two guys are both good guys of strong character, one was the Beast of the East champion. That's why I believe them.

The best thing is that the mistake was caught early enough that only one team was affected. Imagine if 2-3 more rounds had progressed?

    which team had the "misrepresentation"

Jeff pretty much summed up what happened.

I just wanted to add one thing.
It was announced that 2 Kids falsified a scorecard.
That turned out not to be true, in fact, there was no scorecard from that game turned in.

The problem occurred when Skinny tried to figure out who won the match since there was no scorecard.  I'm not sure if "misrepresented" is the best word. I think maybe "misunderstanding" is better since it definitely wasn't their intention to pull the wool over anyone's eyes and cheat their way further into the tournament.

The reason I know this is for a couple reasons.
For one, these guys have played in probably 50 tournaments over the years here in Maryland. They know how a bracket works and how a tournament runs and they know they'd never, ever get away with something like that.  Jeff is correct in saying that we play out the place winners for the top 8 in our 64-team tournaments. They left the playing area and were sitting down to play poker when Jeff had to run and find them because they were called. One guy even questioned if they were really still in and was told that they were (which is understandable considering the bracket was then wrong).

The bottom line is that a misunderstanding occurred which caused one team to win a meaningless game in the final tournament. I know I would have killed to have a few more on that final day! I don't think it's necessary to place blame or to guess at people's intention when it's probably better just to move on.
