  • so I just watched this program in HD and although it was entertaining, I'm disappointed the main focus was on portraying the event as a gathering of drunken idiots throwing ping pong balls all over the place.

they hardly gave any air time to serious teams in it for the competition and showed a whopping 10s of the finals. the fringles girls, after shot girls, and the dudes dressed in granny outfits each got way over a minute, not to mention the drunken accountant from Kent state who was the star of the program.

i'll admit, the program is entertaining, especially for people who are not serious about the game or who are unfamiliar with it, but it does little to make beer pong a more legitimate sport...

B,D,S, did you guys have any say in what would be aired?

I agree-- he really portrayed it as pretty sophomoric.  Didn't get into the competitive aspect at all, which was too bad.  I think he had it pigeonholed from the beginning as a drunksport and didn't really bother to change his view.

Frankly Mr. Shankly it's the kind of thing that gives Rick Reilly a lot of credibility in my book.  That guy gets it, and I respect him for that.

  • I think that's all you could expect from an Art Mann show really.  Not that I wasn't disappointed with seeing so much of so many annoying people - (less all my people of course) - but look at Smashing Time's interview with Jay Thomas.  They did a great job of repping the seriousness/competitive nature of how we play the game, but the minute Ron starts slurring a few words together, they start making fun of him, and don't stop through the end of the show.

Some people are just trying to find a comedic story - not a sports story.  Reily is a sports writer, Art mann I'm afraid is not.

  • Well, lets remember this is still a drinking game, guys. It can't really be taken too seriously at this current time.

I think in the future, the image of the sport will improve. The fact of the matter is, there will ALWAYS be that drunken, annoying dude who can't hit shit that some film crew will always focus on. It's rare that they'd actually feature someone like Foster who really takes it seriously. That's another reason why Last Cup was so good.

However, if Alex gets his special sold to a network, THAT is where you're going to see the true spirit of our game. They took it very seriously, and that was really refreshing. In fact, when they were doing the player profile things (like they have in the NFL when the player is looking down and then up toward the camera), they actually told me to be more serious. Haha.

At the end of the day, it's all about having fun. But, I think I'm like a lot of you guys who religiously post on here, practice a few times a week and travel all over to find a tournament - I don't have fun unless I'm winning. Alex's special will definitely showcase that serious side of the game.

Here's to hoping Alex's show gets aired. I have no doubt it will be the best thing that's ever been put together for bpong and beer pong as a whole.

I personally liked the Art Mann feature for the most part, cause it was obvious what the goal was.  I think seeing the 10 seconds of the final with the lights dimmed and the cameras rolling - and knowing it was for 50gs, someone could figure out that there is a more serious side that they weren't focusing on.

You were right about Alex's crew though.  They understood that the event is based around the idea that this isn't just a big party.  I can't wait to see what they put together, and we should all be praying that the end result gets picked up.

I personally just want to see footage of games that isn't limited to a crappy camera angle.
