I do however, feel the recession is killing it and people are having trouble shelling out for it. For teams that don't win a Satellite and have to pay, they might just opt out and not even go.

This is definitely the case with not only me and my partner but also our 3 or 4 other teams I know.  It's hard to justify spending close to a grand with no job even if you are going to have a blast doing it.  Here's to next year!Alcohol

im excited for this year as its gonna be my first time, but i do understand the whole no job thing.... i know a couple lame asses that decided to not go this year because of the whole no job thing Well  kinda seems like an excuse to me.  gotta spend money to make money

It's a weak excuse. I'm unemployed as fuck but knew i had to make it to vegas, no luck with sattys after 2 2nd and 2 3rd place finishes, but i won enuff cash tournies to cover the trip, its all about prioritizing.

I don't think that this is a function of the economy. Long Island has too many dominant players. Beginners have no incentive to play in tourneys out there.

see i dont think thats the whole thing at all. I mean i havent been playing against the top people very long ata all and most people dont know who i am, but im from long island and id rather play the top competition out here and im glad most people r good because how r u suppose to get better if ur playing against people that r terrible, it just gives u a feeling of how good u r until u play the real teams and u get smoked! i have actaully gotten a lot better playing people like pop because i know i have to step up my game and it has worked and i know other people like me who would rather play the top tier teams, so i honestly think it is more of the recession then long island having too much tip tier talent!

  • But heres the thing: you dont represent the average person, you represent the average serious beer pong player. Theres a lot of people that just want to come to a beer pong event and have a good time, and arent that focused on being ultra-competitive. To them, getting beaten in 5 minutes isnt really fun. We as a community need to recognize that we've put ourselves on such a ridiculous pedestal, and we've separated ourselves from the casual players. I don't know what the solution is, but I think we need to find a way to bring beer pong a little back to its roots a little bit.

Heres what I'm saying: think about the first time you played pong. Now, I'm old. The first time I played pong was in 1998. To me, it was a way to a) socialize, and b) play a fun, yet competitive game. It wasnt *all* competition. The WSOBP is a *very* fun event, and I feel that it is driven by the same spirit that made me love the game to begin with. But I also feel like most local tournaments have just became straight competitions, and I think something needs to change. I dont know what that something is yet, but theres something...

As far as the recession being an issue people go to bars in recessions. When the casual player is paying $20/person thats just gonna go into Pop's pocket, it doesnt matter what the economy is, they're gonna stop paying. You, as a serious player, look at that and say "heres a chance for me to get better", but there are a ton of people that don't view it that way. I think we  need to change the way that competitive beer pong is presented to casual players in order to breathe life back into the local tourneys. I do have some ideas, but its close to 1am, and I have about 30 emails concerning registration that I need to get to. I'm not trying to start a discussion on this topic right now, because I don't have the time, but I figured I would just get out what's been on my mind lately.

  • Not charging $20 a day for girls to watch would be a good start to bring back some of the fun.  I always thought Wan was gay until he came to Fresno and there were actually a couple girls there watching.  (I'm still actually not sure on Juan)

  • ya i went to that tournament and wan wasnt the only one more interested in girls than pong. ive been to a lot of satellites and that was probably the most all around fun. the funny thing is that the girls werent even hot, but any tail is appreciated at a pong tourney.
