Post subject: Rule clarification: Re-rack timing

  • A weird trend I've noticed lately... even at the WSOBP V.  Teams are not re-racking before taking their turn to throw.  Some even push the forward on the table.... shoot their shots.... then re-rack.  Is this "legal"?

Example:  Team A takes their turn and hits their 4th cup of the game, which would result in a re-rack (6 cups left) before their next turn.  Team B does not re-rack right away.... they push the cups towards the center of the table then take their shots.  After they are done shooting Team B pulls the cups back and re-racks the 6 for Team A.  This only happens when a re-rack (6, 3 or 1) occurs after a turn.

This doesn't really bother me, but I've seen some teams get FIRED UP about it swearing it's against the rules.  Obviously, I've read the rules many times and I can't find a definitive answer to this.  Any thoughts?

Post subject: Rule clarification: Re-rack timing

  • Well, the rules don't address this specific situation. However, I don't think moving the cups out of the way before re-racking should be allowed based on my interpretation of the following rules:

    "BPONG"
Reformation is to take place as soon as applicable, even in the middle of a turn (i.e. mid-turn reracks).

"As soon as applicable" to me means as soon as the cup is hit that causes there to be 6/3/1 cups left. It emphasizes mid-turn racks here, but I think that's mainly because that's different from traditional house rules

    "BPONG"
Players may not move cups out of position in order to gain a leaning advantage.

This more or less forbids it, unless you want to make the argument that having a re-rack opportunity is some sort of special case.

Either way, doesn't make a huge difference to me, but it would probably help to address this specific situation in the rules if it really is becoming a point of contention.

Post subject: Rule clarification: Re-rack timing

  • The way the rules are currently written, players do not have to re-rack their own side of the table before they shoot. I don't think there is much confusion on this matter (someone please correct me if i have this wrong).

You are not allowed to move cups out of your way to shoot. So, if people are moving cups to the middle of the table before they shoot, and then re-racking afterwards, that is a violation. I will try to clarify the rules to make that more evident.
